A peridomestic population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Glossinidae) at Kontagora town, Niger state, Nigeria Entomología
Ahmed,A. B..
The present article considers some aspects of a peridomestic population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 in Kontagora, Nigeria. This situation characterizes an abnormal behaviour of the vector, and it is of significant epidemiological importance. Data on the ecology of this species were collected in 1995 and 1999. The results indicated that the species exists during both dry and wet seasons; approximately 30.0% of the catches were gorged with blood giving a MHS of 2.4, indicating a well-nourished population. Dissection of inseminated pars indicated pregnancy rates of approximately 30.0% and 70.0% in the dry and wet seasons and the presence of all 4 stages of pregnancy, suggesting that breeding occurs at both seasons....

Observations on Estrus as Monitored by Receptivity to Mating Activity and Pattern of Vaginal Exfoliates In Trypanosoma brucei Infected WAD Goat does Synchronized with Estrumate® International Journal of Morphology
Leigh,Olufisayo Oluwadamilare; Fayemi,Oluremi Eric.
The effects of experimental Trypanosoma brucei infection on receptivity to mating activity and pattern of vaginal exfoliates were monitored using twenty-one adult WAD goats which were synchronized with double injection, seven days apart of Estrumate®. The twenty-one goats consisted of 3 bucks and 18 does. The does were randomly divided into control group 'A' having 10 does and test group 'B' with 8 does. The goats were fed with Elephant grass in the morning and commercial feed containing 15.23% CP at the rate of 0.25kg/head in the afternoons. Freshwater was provided ad libitum. Results showed that while all the control does were observed to stand to be mounted and mated, none of the infected does did. Also, the pattern of the mean percentage vaginal...

Pneumonia as the cause of death in gilts experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei OAK
Allam, L; Ogwu, D; Agbede, R.I.S; Sackey, A.K.B.
A study was conducted in 24 gilts to determine the effect of Trypanosoma brucei infection on their reproductive efficiency. The infected gilts developed clinical trypanosomosis following a prepatent period of 2-3 days with 1.8 x 10⁶ trypanosomes per gilt. The clinical signs were observed intermittent fever, pale mucus membranes, short moist cough, moist rales, mucopurulent ocular discharges and hyperemia of the skin, reduced feed intake, and loss of body condition, recumbency, uncoordinated movements, posterior paresis and death of gilts. The cause of death in the pigs was pneumonia caused by Escherichia coli. Grossly, the lungs were severely congested and had undergone gray hepatization. Histopathologically, the lungs had thickened and congested alveolar...

Transcriptional analyses of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense from infected mice and in vitro culture OAK
Kuboki, Noritaka; Kibe, Michael K; Thekisoe, Oriel M. M.; Sugimoto, Chihiro; Inoue, Noboru.
With the hypothesis that African trypanosomes could have in vivo specific genes for adaptation to host’s environment, the present study was conducted by using suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH) technique to seek the highly expressed genes especially in host. A total of 328 clones from the in vivo SSH library and that of 160 clones from the in vitro SSH library were analyzed in order to determine their expression levels, but none of the above-mentioned genes showed differential expression. This indicates that no trypanosome genes could be differentially expressed either the in vivo or in vitro propagated trypanosomes. Alternatively, there might be limitation for detecting specifically expressed genes in African trypanosomes using this method,...

Trypanosomatid comparative genomics: contributions to the study of parasite biology and different parasitic diseases Genet. Mol. Biol.
Teixeira,Santuza M.; Paiva,Rita Márcia Cardoso de; Kangussu-Marcolino,Monica M.; DaRocha,Wanderson D..
In 2005, draft sequences of the genomes of Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania major, also known as the Tri-Tryp genomes, were published. These protozoan parasites are the causative agents of three distinct insect-borne diseases, namely sleeping sickness, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, all with a worldwide distribution. Despite the large estimated evolutionary distance among them, a conserved core of ~6,200 trypanosomatid genes was found among the Tri-Tryp genomes. Extensive analysis of these genomic sequences has greatly increased our understanding of the biology of these parasites and their host-parasite interactions. In this article, we review the recent advances in the comparative genomics of these three species. This analysis also...
